Australia's Café Capitals — Which Suburbs Have the Most Cafés & Restaurants Nearby?
23 May 2026 · SuburbCheck
We counted cafés and restaurants within walking distance of every Australian suburb. The results say a lot about where the country actually likes to hang out.
Australians take their coffee seriously. So we asked a genuinely important question: which suburbs put the most cafés and restaurants within walking distance of your front door?
How we counted
For every suburb, we counted the cafés and restaurants mapped within a 2km radius of its centre, using OpenStreetMap data — the same amenity data that feeds our Liveability Score. We've limited the chart to suburbs with at least 3,000 residents, so it reflects places people actually live rather than empty entertainment strips.
A quick honesty note: this is a count of *mapped* venues, so the very best-mapped inner-city areas have a natural edge. It's a fun proxy for "where's the buzz", not a Michelin guide.
What the leaderboard tells us
Unsurprisingly, the top of the list is dominated by dense inner-city suburbs — the kind of place where a five-minute walk passes a dozen brunch spots. These are the suburbs where you don't need a car to find dinner, and it shows up in their liveability scores too.
What's more interesting is the drop-off. Café density falls away fast outside the inner ring, which is a neat illustration of why "walkable amenity" is such a strong driver of how liveable a suburb feels. A suburb either has a café strip you can stroll to, or it doesn't — and that single fact shapes a lot of daily life.
Cafés are a liveability signal
There's a serious point buried in the flat whites. The number of places to eat and drink nearby is one of the clearest signals of a suburb's walkable amenity — which is exactly why it feeds into liveability. If you want the full picture rather than just the caffeine:
- Sort suburbs by Liveability Score to see where amenities, open space and climate combine.
- Or compare your shortlist on safety, schools and price too — café count is fun, but it's only one ingredient.
