Frequently asked questions
- What is an ICSEA rating?
- ICSEA (Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage) is ACARA's measure of the socio-educational background of a school's students, on a scale where 1000 is the national average. It's the standard like-for-like benchmark for comparing schools across Australia; higher-ICSEA schools tend to record stronger academic results.
- How do I find the best schools near me?
- Zoom the map into your suburb and look for the green dots — schools with an ICSEA of 1000 or above are coloured green (above average) or dark green (1100+, well above average). Click any school to see its exact ICSEA, sector and enrolment numbers, then use the sector and type filters to narrow to government, Catholic or independent primary or secondary schools.
- Where does the school data come from?
- All schools are sourced from ACARA's MySchool dataset (2023), covering government, Catholic and independent schools nationally. NAPLAN averages are not published in this dataset, so ICSEA is used as the quality signal.
