Which Brisbane suburbs are genuinely good for families? We combined school quality, residential safety and liveability into one ranking. Here's what came out on top.

Brisbane's best suburbs for families (family score)

"Best suburb for families" means different things to different people, but three things come up again and again: good schools, low crime, and enough nearby amenities that daily life is easy. So that's exactly what we measured.

The family score

The ranking above blends three of our suburb scores into a single family composite:

  • Education — 40%. Based on the average ICSEA of schools in the catchment and the share of residents with a bachelor's degree.
  • Residential safety — 30%. Residential crime per resident, benchmarked against the Queensland median.
  • Liveability — 30%. Walkable shops, parks and playgrounds, medical services and climate comfort.

Education carries the most weight because, for most families choosing a suburb, schools are the single biggest factor. Where a component is missing we re-normalise over the rest, so a suburb is never unfairly penalised for a data gap.

What makes a Brisbane family suburb work

The suburbs near the top combine solid local schools with quiet, residential streets and good access to parks and shops. Established middle-ring suburbs tend to do well — they have mature schools and amenities without the higher crime that comes with entertainment precincts.

It's worth comparing a couple of contenders side by side rather than fixating on a single number. A suburb that's a touch lower on liveability but stronger on schools might suit a family with school-age kids better than the reverse.

Beyond the ranking

  • Check the school catchment detail on each suburb profile — we list the schools in and around the suburb, with ICSEA, rather than ranking them.
  • Weigh up your commute: every profile shows estimated time to the Brisbane CBD.
  • Think about the next ten years, not just today — our growth projections flag which suburbs are expanding fastest.
