Liveability is more than a vibe. We break down Sydney's most liveable suburbs using walkable amenities, open space and climate — and explain what actually drives the score.

Sydney's most liveable suburbs (Liveability Score)

"Liveable" is one of those words that gets thrown around without much behind it. We wanted a version you could actually measure — so our Liveability Score is built from concrete things you can walk to, not adjectives.

What goes into liveability

The chart ranks Sydney's most liveable suburbs by Liveability Score, which blends:

  • Everyday amenities — supermarkets, cafés and restaurants, GPs and pharmacies within walking distance.
  • Open space — parks, playgrounds and sports fields nearby, plus the share of the suburb within 400m of green space.
  • Climate comfort — a mild penalty for very hot summers.

Crucially, we count amenities within a short radius of the suburb's centre, not just inside its boundary. A small suburb sitting next to a shopping strip gets credit for it — because in real life, you'd walk there.

Why the inner and middle rings dominate

Sydney's most liveable suburbs cluster where density meets greenery: inner-west and eastern suburbs where you can walk to a café, a park and a train all in ten minutes. The harbour and beaches help, but they're not the whole story — plenty of leafy middle-ring suburbs score well because they pair quiet streets with genuine local amenity.

What pulls a suburb *down* is isolation: large outer suburbs where every errand needs a car tend to score lower, even when they're pleasant places to live.

Liveability isn't the whole picture

A highly liveable suburb can still be expensive or have patchy schools. That's the point of looking at the scores together rather than chasing one number:

  • Compare liveability against price — some of Sydney's best-value liveable suburbs are a few stops further out than the obvious ones.
  • Pair it with transport — the two often go together, but not always.
  • If you've got kids, weigh it against education and safety too.
